A Basic RV Inspection Checklist for Your Next Road Trip

Lindsey Calin • Nov 08, 2021

Just like all cars and trucks, the recreational vehicle needs occasional upkeep. However, there is an added dimension to its upkeep—RVs act as both moving vehicles and living quarters. You must assess the condition of everything from your engine to your refrigerator. Here is a basic RV inspection checklist for your next road trip.

Your RV’s Roof

Your RV’s roof is one of the places you likely don’t often visit—unless you have a walkable rooftop. The roof never catches a break from the unrelenting UV rays and penetrating raindrops which ultimately weaken the protective coating. Check your RV’s roof for cracks and broken seals, spraying it with water to see if you have any internal leaks.

Your RV’s Appliances

The guiding principle of the recreational vehicle is convenience—the RV gives you everything you need to live and move. To maximize the RV’s convenience, it houses multiple appliances for your everyday needs.

Refrigerators, microwaves, sinks, air conditioning units, water heaters—all of these and more contribute to a fully functioning RV. You must check that each system works to its fullest capacity and tend to the necessary RV appliance repair before hitting the road.

Your RV’s Tires

Since your RV will haul its massive weight across miles and miles of road, you need to make sure your tires are in good shape. Just like regular cars, recreational vehicles need new tires from time to time. We recommend a three-year maximum usage per tire due to the weight of the vehicle, the rough terrain it endures, and the tendency to develop dry rot.

Your RV’s Slide-Out

The slide-out awning is one of the best features on an RV, but it’s completely useless if it malfunctions. Slide-outs often develop fabric brittleness, small tears, and grinding hydraulics that will keep it from performing properly or even retracting. Because RVs are so long and slide-outs are unique features, recreational vehicles need parts that many service centers may lack. The last thing you want is to be on the road and have a slide-out problem with no service options for your vehicle nearby.
